I would just add that it also means sticking to your values when it is not easy or comfortable.

As I read this, it felt like I was reading a history book about what this sport used to be 😓😓😓

appreciate you reading it Héctor, and for sure i get that. it does feel like the sport’s soul is being auctioned off one press release at a time. but sticking to your values in this game isn’t nostalgia. it’s strategy. long-term wins only come if you know what shouldn’t be for sale.

Solid work…. This line caught me hard… “Manchester United didn’t just stop winning. They stopped feeling like United”. As a united fan, I know this is the gospel truth, the club has its soul

thanks rodney. it’s painful but true. the results slipped, but the real loss was identity. 'Manchester Discontented' sums it up better these days. hopefully someone at the top starts to feel it too.

On the money with this one Jordan! The saying "the game's gone" came to mind as I read your piece. But seeing all the parades in different cities like London, Naples, Liverpool, etc., gives me hope that owners see what it means and look at clubs differently.

glad it landed Dean. “the game’s gone” definitely hits, but every now and then a parade or a proper title run reminds you there’s still soul in it. just depends who’s in charge and whether they’re chasing legacy or just leverage.

Great post, Jordan. I agree with everything. As a Manchester United fan, it’s depressing. Culture breeds profit, at the end of the day. The reason Manchester United became what they are (were?) is because of the culture. But hey ho, we live to fight another (relegation) battle.

appreciate you Gurmeet. for me, culture is what made united special in the first place. it’s what built the commercial empire, the success, everything. once that fades, everything else starts to fall apart.

Yep. Ironically, I think there is too much of a focus on 'getting more fans.' Essentially that's the new culture at the club. I get it, a lot of marketing across industries is very similar, but sports will always have a difference and that is how to interact with the customer (aka the fans). Strange enough, because of that traditional marketing mentality, even the fan culture's become toxic at Man Utd.

I’ve encountered numerous investment groups and their subgroups, and I completely agree. Many of them tend to overprice basic services and complicate the process, which can be quite off-putting. Another issue is that some groups are so set in their ways that they refuse to listen to alternative approaches. This is where the phrase “it’s okay to walk away” really resonates. It’s crucial to remember that sometimes, stepping back is the best option in such consultations.
